Through its system of volcano observatories, the USGS operates its national Volcano Hazards Program. There are some 169 volcanoes in the United States and its territories that are competent of eruption. Major potential for eruption exists in areas like Yellowstone National Park and Seattle, Washington. An eruption can not only be life intimidating, but as watched in Alaskas Redoubt Volcano eruptions of 2009,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they can severely disrupt airline and climate cargo vehicle because of ejected ash plumes.
In a reception unlock announcing the fashionable funding telling August 13, 2009, Secretary of Interior Salazar says, These stimulus asset ambition no only establish or maintain jobs, merely also could very well maintain lives. The funds assist protect either people above the floor as well as airline tourists flying over the eruption-prone districts. At the same period that the funds are helping public safety, they are also spurring technological innovation with economy benefits.
The funding of these major monitoring facilities has been meager in recent years and funds have been made available via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to upgrade data communication systems in the North Marianas Island and enhance monitoring capabilities of the five observatories base in the states of Alaska, Wyoming,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hawaii, California and Washington.
Recent blasts of the Mount Redoubt Volcano close Anchorage in the summer of 2009 highlight the important mission of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) sponsored volcano observatories operated at the agent in Alaska and cross the nation. Volcano observatories monitor and analyze the activity of spirited volcanic regions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], conduct geophysical research and dispense safety warning information concerning outbreaks to residents and local governments.
Volcano Monitoring Program Funding Provided from ARRA Alaska (Observatory): $7,560,000California (Observatory): $200,000Hawaii (Observatory): $3,300,000North Marianas Islands (Data Networking): $800,000Washington (Observatory): $2,500,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000Wyoming (Observatory): $950,000Mission of the Volcano Hazards Program

ARRA funding will be used to improve the capacity of the USGS to monitor active volcanoes and mainly transfer omen information to residents of communities that could be effected by one eruption. Funds are also being committed to patronize of university research on volcanology, risk assessment, and effective eruption monitoring systems. Use of the stimulus funding will patronize jobs in public agencies, universities, and the private sector.
